What did we do this week? A week in Bingham Kindergarten.

The weather was gorgeous, so the children started the week at our equivalent of Forest school (outdoor school). They used objects to trace around the shadows in the bright sunshine and were amazed that they couldn't catch their own shadows! The children loved being outside in nature, and we always encourage them to have a fascination with the outside, stopping to listen to the noises in the park, observe, and try to identify them.

Our younger children (2 and 3-year-olds) were learning about recycling and learning to identify what materials are made from and putting them together. They painted and collected rubbish! Our eco-warriors of the future?! The elder children, meanwhile, were preparing to welcome 10 eggs into the nursery. We use the 'Living Eggs' programme, which brings in fertilised eggs that are about to hatch, an incubator, and a brooder box for later. We set the eggs up and turn on the incubator to 37.7°C. The eggs then usually hatch on the Tuesday and Wednesday of the week. We were not disappointed! The children saw a couple hatch, and then inevitably the rest hatched overnight—cuteness alert—a box of fluffy chicks the next morning! Everyone, parents, teachers, and of course the children, were so excited. We all watched, counted, observed, and then talked about lifecycles, chicks, frogs, and people. Big questions were asked, what came first, the chicken or the egg? We touched on chicken being food, the children were quite steady to that. After a weekend reprieve, the children will be allowed to handle the chicks next week; the highlight is when the chicks poo, they find that hilarious!

We had lots of fun playing in the garden too. We learnt how to play duck duck goose, running round and round the circle. The garden was well used this week in the 28°C! We all cooked delicious cheese straws and went home happy at the end of the week.

A lovely time was had by all!
